2 stars (BUYERS BE AWARE 8th Edition Published) - Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 Students: the 8th edition of this book is published and comes with a CD, and, in some cases, a free world atlas. Check with your instructor for requirements. In any case, I wouldn't spend $100 for the 7th edition. Haven't read the book yet, so no rating. 4 stars (Very well-written and illustrated text with great photos) - Obviously written by authors who have a deep appreciation for this subject and a desire to pass on their knowledge, this text is useful not just for students of physical geography, but for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of geopolitics, area studies, anthropology, world history, etc. For example, I would have no clue about the culture, history and politics of Central Asia/Afghanistan and vicinity (my area of interest) without having a comprehensive understanding of the physical terrain and climate of this region--and how its inhabitants have adapted to it. I would not have gained this understanding without reading this text. My only complaint is that I had hoped for more emphasis on environmental issues. The authors may feel that this is beyond the scope of an introductory text; but problems such as the shrinking Aral Sea and tropical rainforest destruction are so widely catastrophic that I believe they deserve greater attention and understanding even at the introductory level. 5 stars (still on my bookshelf) - I remember this book from when I was an undergraduate, lo these many years ago (OK, so it was an earlier edition)! I'm glad to see it is still available and updated -- I enjoyed it then and I am using it now in answering the questions my children throw at me. This is an excellent resource book. I probably wouldn't pick it up as a light read at bedtime, but if you are interested in this topic you could do far worse than to get _Physical Geography_. ... 5 stars (What is Thy Will, M'lord?) - Well it seems up to me to set the record here... There aren't many reviews as of this typing and the game is getting scarce (might be discontinued - stores aren't getting new copies?)... So what's the boggle folks? Three important points to cover in this review, here they go: 1. Performance? This game, as far as I've experienced, as no bugs. It runs flawlessly, doesn't stutter or pause at all, and the graphics and sound quality are astounding. If you like 3D then Poo-Poo on you: the 2D graphics in this game outshine many 3D games on the market. The major problems that many PC-gamers have that they don't realize are among the following: virus scanning software running in the background, unnecessary background programs in memory, outdated drivers (video, sound, motherboard, etc), or just plain shoddy equipment (the cheapest and best advertised isn't the best quality!)... For the sake of guidance make sure you PC matches or exceeds the minimum requirements: the game developers did a good job of estimating what kind of hardware is needed to run the game smoothly... 2. Gameplay? Moooohahah! Total War - Total what? Knights of Honor (KoH) is on a level that cannot be compared with the current offering of strategy titles - perhaps that is why it hasn't exploded on the scene... KoH is much slower paced than other games (possibly even more time-consuming than Civilization - or at least equal)... But that is its strength: if you don't like to micromanage and don't have the patience to wait several minutes for something, anything, to happen then don't bother with KoH... The user interface, help menus, and in-game events are easy to follow and manipulate. The options for guiding your nation surpass any game I've played recently (again with maybe the exception of the latest Civlization offering)... If you like Civilization and Medieval simulations then KoH has consumed anything available today - play the demo and see for yoursel... 4 stars (No Title(still)) - Knights of the Old Republic is the infamous 2003 game of the year. But the sequal is anything but game of the year material. I think that the one thing people liked about the first game was the detail, characters, and the plot twists. Okay, lets start in the detail. Once agian, the Bioware team knock my socks off with their insanly detailed character models, mabey not Halo or Metroid pixals, but it checks out in my book. Number dos, the characters. You once agian get thrown in with the oddest asortment of torture droids, jedi masters, and hot redhead bounty hunters. Thought some of your party members do reveal Revan's secrets -cough Keria- you can't find any party members famaly like you did with almost your whole party in the last game, although you do need some backround influnce to turn them into jedis'. The cameo aperences are extreme cameos, you see 10 seconds of Admiral Carth Onasi other than that, you have your two favorite droids in your posse (not C3-PO & R2), and HK-47 has some nice opions and voice recitings of Carth and the nice kissing scene with you and Bastaila, yep, HK heard it. The plot was intresting enough, but I think their should be better voice overs and less talking on Telos. I don't want to go too far into the plot, but heres a qustion before I leave. People and magazines hyped Darth Nithilus way too much and gave him a micro sized part in the game, why? Like any other RPG you pick up characters and weapons/items along your journey. Along the way you'll have questions answered that takes this game for a wild turn. In other words, this story line is one of the best for any Role playing game in quite a while. This game is so much fun that words cannot describe. My only complaint of this game was the controls. But like any other game, the more you play the more you get used to. This game is worth the purchase. 4 stars (Not Her Best Work) - While I personally think that Angela Knight could write a phone book & make it sexy, I wasn't that thrilled with this latest work. Mercenaries is a compilation of three related short stories that center around members of the mercenery starship Starrunner. The first story features Capt. Nathan August & his whirlwind love affair with religious planet cult member, Trinity Yeager. Trin is willing to to do anything to get off the zealots colony - including taking the captain up on his drunken bargain of passage in exchange for a night with both himself and Sebastion, his first officer, at the same time. Quickly following is Sebastions story of falling head over heals for a dominant/submissive princess while the Starrunners merceneries are on a rescue mission.He's there bait, their spy to get into the palace. But can he handle being a submissive? Or does his captor really want to be captivated? Lastly is the story of a female mercenery from Starrunner who made a cameo appearance in the first short story. During an interplanetary war where merceneries have been hired on both sides, Cassidy is embattled in a deadly dogfight against an opposing mercenery warrior. In a last ditch effort at survival she ditches onto a lonely planet only to be followed by her pursuer. When Rune sees that the impressive warrior is a woman he decides that in his culture - where women are scarce- she would make a perfect edition to his future gene pool. All the stories had a spark & related well, but I just couldn't buy the concept that all 3 couples were ready to push their different cultures aside & marry after just 24 hours - 3 weeks. Real life is a little more complicated. 3 stars (Good/Bad, I can't classify it, it goes all over the board) - I'm going to warn everyone looking at buying this game to make sure that their computer's specs are much more than the requirements of this game. My Computer has twice the requirements and I get really choppy performance (twice the RAM, twice the processor speed, a better than recommended graphics card, et cetera). The reason anyone's going to be looking at this game is for the lightsaber combat, which is awesome!. The problem is that when you're fighting someone else with a lightsaber, there's so much that the computer has to do, that your framerate drops to unacceptable levels. One thing to look at is this game's predecessor, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. My computer runs that game flawlessly, even with multiple jedi duking it out with all their powers. So I don't get why my coputer can't run this as well. One area where this game is much better than it's predecessor is the maps. In Jedi Knight 2, I'm always looking at the maps and thinking about, "why is there this bottomless pit here?" Or, "How did all those guys up there shooting at me get there, there's no way up or down from there." At least in the two levels of this game that I've played (I have the demo, not the full game) everything seems to have a purpose where it is, even if it does seem a little odd (like a tomb in ruins, that's built straddling a bottomless rift) As for the story, I can't tell you whether or not it's compelling like the one in Jedi Knight 2 or not because I haven't played the full game, but from what I've read, it's a lot more contrived than it's predecessor. So beware of this game, don't play it unless your computer is at LEAST 1.25ghz and you have about 512mb RAM, otherwise you'll get stutters where you don't know what's happening. As for me, I'm not going to buy it solely because of the poor performance I've gotten on the demo, I might buy it for my xbox though, just so I can play it through. 2 stars (Could... 4 stars (A long LONG time ago?) - This is definitely a fun game, but don't play it unless you have a lot of time on your hands because you can easily get engrossed and play for a good 10 hours (I'm guilty of that). I do have a slight problem with the game though, (it come's from being a nerd who gets into the details of everything I watch/play) and that is how it ties into the Star Wars universe. I feel like this game isn't quite in the same universe, it kinda straddles Star Wars and some unnamed other universe. For instance, yes, it has Jedi, yes there are lightsabers, yes, there's a ship that's alot like the Millenium Falcon. But, lots of the technology seems like it has no place in Star Wars. The environments go from looking dead on (Taris) to looking like something out of Star Trek (Manaan), and that's not an insult because I love Star Trek too. The story is incredibly interesting and there are alot, verging on too many, options of customizing your character, though I suppose that's typical for this genre. The graphics are amazing and run very well, even on a system that just barely meets the requirements. But I don't like tweeking the graphics for each environment, and it seems like there are times when my computer just doesn't want to render quickly so it starts being jumpy, but that's rare. I think if I could buy this over again, I'd buy it on the Xbox, since that's what I did for it's sequel, and will continue to do for every game that I really want that's on both systems. 3 stars (10.4.2 warning!) - This game will not work with 10.4.2, unless you use the Aspyr-provided workaround.
